None of us like to think that food banks will still be a part of our future. We would like nothing better than to close our doors because no one needs us. Unfortunately, there is still a lot of work to do in our society to see this become a reality. While we continue to work with other organizations to find lasting solutions, families and individuals will continue to need food.

Why my mom left a bequest to the food bank ...

In 1948, a few years after WW11 ended, my mom sailed with her family to Canada from England. The first years weren’t easy – only once did she share with me that they often went hungry. She told me about the fear she experienced, and how alone she felt. There were few her family could turn to for support.

Over the years, mom raised her own family and became a vital member of her community. She regularly donated to the Calgary Food Bank too – I guess she never forgot those early years and didn’t want anyone else experiencing what she had gone through.

Mom passed away recently. In her will, she gave money to the food bank. It didn’t really occur to me until then the depth of her feeling and the suffering she must have endured. I’m so proud of her.

In honour of my mom, I have now chosen to donate monthly. It would seem mom’s legacy is really more than the money she left behind. It’s the example of caring she set for her family and for her community.

Will Planning

How Does It Work?

  • Discuss it with your family to make sure it is the right decision
  • Go to a trusted advisor and tell them what you would like
  • By donating to a charitable organization in your will, the tax burden left to relatives could possibly impact end of life taxes
  • There is no immediate cost and it can allow for you to leave a larger gift that you can afford during your lifetime
